Adena Alahverdian is a research assistant at the Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services
Research and Development (CHSR), Gerald and Patricia Turpanjian College of Health Sciences
(CHS). She joined the CHSR in 2022 and has been involved in different projects conducted by
CHSR. She has been a Teaching Associate for the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program
courses General Principles of Public Health Problem Solving and Social and Behavioral Sciences
in Public Health and for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. She received her
Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the American University of Armenia in 2022.
Adena has received the Louise Doumanian Memorial Endowed Scholarship and Ohannes and
Hripsime Doumanian Endowed Scholarship while studying in the MPH program. Her master’s
degree thesis project focused on exploring “Attitudes, Expectations, and Experiences of Smoking
Cessation Quitline Users and/or Smokers About the Quitline Services in Armenia”. Adena
participated in the 9th European Conference on Tobacco or Health in Madrid, Spain, in April
2023 and had a poster presentation of her thesis research, the abstract of the research is published
in the Tobacco Prevention & Cessation Journal. She received the European Network for
Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP) travel grant to support her participation in the
conference.

Lilit Alaverdyan is a research assistant at the Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services
Research and Development (CHSR), Gerald and Patricia Turpanjian College of Health Sciences
(CHS). She joined the CHSR in 2021 and has been involved in different projects conducted by
CHSR. Lilit is also Recruitment Coordinator for the Master of Public Health (MPH) and
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs and is actively proving assistance to applicants
to join the programs. She received her Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the American
University of Armenia in 2022. Lilit has received the Armenian Medical Fund Endowed
Scholarship in Memory of Haig Boyadjian while studying in the MPH program. Her master’s
degree thesis project focused on exploring “Needs and Gaps in Education and Healthcare for
Children with Neurodevelopment Delays in Yerevan, Armenia: a Qualitative Study”. Lilit was
actively involved in European Collaboration of Medical students in Research and actively
participated in the project entitled “Investigating the definitions and government policies during
different wave periods of Covid-19”. Lilit took the course “Approach to disability and education:
disability issues in Finland” by Eskoo Center for Disability Empowerment in Finland.

Lusine Aslanyan is a Research Associate at the Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development (CHSR). She has joined the CHSR in mid 2018 and has been involved in a number of projects conducted by CHSR, particularly those focusing on midwifery education assessment and assessment of nutrition practices of school-aged children, institutionalization of patient-centered tuberculosis treatment and assessment of adolescent friendly services in primary healthcare facilities of Armenia. She received a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the American University of Armenia in 2018. She devoted her Master’s thesis project to explore attitudes, norms and behaviors enhancing unhealthy food choices in daily life of high school students in Shirak Marz, Armenia. Lusine participated in the 12th European Public Health Conference in Marseille France in November 2019 presenting her thesis research and publishing an abstract on the same research in the European Public Health Journal. She received Gulbenkian Foundation Travel Grant to support her participation in the conference.
Lusine has received AUA Turpanjian Foundation Scholarship as tuition assistance for the academic year 2016-2017. She has also received Krikor and Caline Soghikian Endowed Scholarship and Hrair and Anna Hovnanian foundation scholarship for the academic year 2017-2018 for continuing her studies at the AUA.
Lusine received a full tuition scholarship to undertake her undergraduate studies in the United States. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Economics from Utah State University.

Astghik Atanyan is a research associate at the Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development (CHSR), Gerald and Patricia Turpanjian College of Health Sciences (CHS).  Dr. Atanyan is involved in different public health projects, and coordinates the “Entrepreneurs in Health” program, which aims to increase access to quality health services in rural communities and regional small towns through the introduction of advanced technologies and innovative approaches supporting healthcare professionals to develop private health practices

Dr. Atanyan has received Dr. Haroutune and Sona Armenian Scholarship and Dr. John Doumanian Endowed partial Scholarship, Krikor and Caline Soghikian Endowed Scholarship while studying in the MPH program. Her integrating experience project focused on reducing exposure to arsenic and lead in mining and smelting communities of Lori region. Before her studies at AUA she has graduated from Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi with MD degree in general medicine in 2016. Before joining the CHS team, Dr. Atayan was actively involved in the Armenian Red Cross Society activities as a first aid instructor, conducting first aid trainings among different communities throughout Armenia , including border communities.

Dr. Demirchyan earned her MD in Pediatrics from Yerevan State Medical University (diploma with honor), and Master of Public Health from AUA College of Health Sciences. She has also completed a residency program in Pediatrics (Yerevan State Medical University, 1986-87), a fellowship program in Human Lactation Management (USA, Wellstart International, 1994, 1997), and a clinical fellowship in Child Development (USA, Meyo Clinic, 1998). In 1998 she received Vartkess and Rita Balian Merit Award from AUA for achieving outstanding academic performance.

During 1992-2000, Dr. Demirchyan was the advisor to the deputy minister responsible for mother and child health issues in Armenia. She was the initiator and first coordinator of the National Breastfeeding Promotion Program in Armenia, managing this comprehensive and successful program for seven years. She has authored a manual on infant nutrition for medical doctors, a guide on feeding of low birth-weight and sick neonates for neonatologists, a curriculum on child development for primary health care providers.

During her employment at the CHSR since 2000, she carried out numerous public health projects, including assessment of Hepatitis B burden in Armenia, technical assistance to UNICEF in preparing the follow-up report on the Decade Goals set by UNICEF World Summit for Children, health sector’s needs assessment in Nagorno Karabagh, and a number of community health surveys. During 2001-2005, she managed a multi-faceted quality assurance program at Nork Marash Medical Center – a tertiary-level cardiac hospital. During 2006-2010, she served as the Senior Research Director for the USAID-funded Primary Health Care Reform Project in Armenia, carrying the primary responsibility for the project monitoring, evaluation, and research activities. Since then, Dr. Demirchyan’s work was mainly focused on research covering a broad spectrum of interests such as child nutrition, health outcomes research, healthcare quality, psychometrics, and mental health. In the meantime, she advised many MPH students for their thesis work. Starting from 2020, Dr. Demirchyan assumed the responsibilities of Research Assistant Professor, co-teaching Graduate Research Seminar course to 2nd year MPH students. Dr. Demirchyan has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and has made numerous presentations of her work at international scientific meetings and conferences.

Aida Giloyan is a Senior Researcher and Project Coordinator at the Garo Meghrigian Institute for Preventive Ophthalmology of the CHSR.  She obtained her MPH degree from the American University of Armenia in 2007.  After graduating from AUA, she worked in different projects and organizations such as Intra Health International and Project NOVA (funded by USAID), Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, OSCE office in Yerevan as a Project Assistant.  Since 2010 she has been working at the Meghrigian Institute and has been coordinating ophthalmologic research and many projects in Armenia and Artsakh. Aida Giloyan authored a number of peer-reviewed publications and has made numerous presentations of her work at international scientific meetings and conferences.

Dr. Arusyak Harutyunyan is a Research Assistant Professor in the  Turpanjian College of Health Sciences (CHS) and a Senior Researcher at the Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development. Dr. Harutyunyan has led multiple quantitative and qualitative studies focusing on Tobacco Control, Tuberculosis Control and Maternal and Child Health. She is currently the Principal Investigator of the “Smoke-free coalitions in Armenia and Georgia project: A community randomized trial” (in partnership with Emory University and supported by the US National Institute of Health).  Dr. Harutyunyan teaches Basics of Health Lifestyle course to undergraduate students, co-teaches General Principles of Public Health Problem Solving and Graduate Research Seminar to graduate students. Dr. Harutyunyan is also the Coordinator (a volunteer position) of the Coalition for Tobacco Free Armenia, a union of 30 NGOs. In 2012, she was competitively selected to receive a Scholarship and completed the Global Tobacco Control Certificate Program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In 2015, Dr. Harutyunyan completed the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center’s Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification Training Program and received Mayo Clinic’s Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certificate. In 2017, she received a scholarship and completed the European Regional Tobacco Control Leadership Program hosted by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) in Kiev, Ukraine. In 2018 she obtained the US National Certificate in Tobacco Control Practice in recognition of her significant amount of experience in this field.
Dr. Harutyunyan earned her MD from Yerevan State Medical University in 2007 and Master of Public Health from the American University of Armenia in 2009. In 2008 she received Vartkess and Rita Balian Merit Award from AUA for achieving outstanding scholastic record and for showing great promise towards a professional career. She has also completed a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Yerevan State Medical University, 2011) and has been a practicing Obstetrician/gynecologist. Dr. Harutyunyan has published in peer-reviewed journals and extensively presented her work in various international scientific conferences.

Varduhi Hayrumyan is a Research Associate at the Zvart Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development (CHSR). She has joined the CHSR in 2015 and has been involved in a number of projects conducted by CHSR, particularly those focusing on Tobacco Control. Since 2017 she is the Human Protections Administrator of the Institutional Review Boards of the American University of Armenia. She has made numerous presentations of her work at international scientific conferences. She received a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the American University of Armenia in 2016. During her studies she received full merit-based scholarship from AUA and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia. She devoted her Master’s thesis project to the investigation of smoking cessation practices among myocardial infarction survivors. Varduhi has also earned a Master of Science (MS) in Applied Biosciences (Healthcare Biotechnology) from Yerevan State University, Department of Biology with an honor diploma.

Dr. Vahe Khachadourian earned his MD from Yerevan State Medical University and Master of Public Health (MPH) from American University of Armenia (AUA) in 2011. After graduating from the AUA MPH program, he worked at Zvart Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development (CHSR) on a number of research projects including psychopathology of earthquake survivors, health sector needs assessment in Artsakh, and environmental and health impact assessment in mining communities in Armenia.  In 2014, Dr. Khachadourian began his PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he received advanced training in quantitative research methods. His PhD thesis applied a mediation analysis framework and machine learning algorithms quantifying the impacts of natural disasters on diabetes and mortality. During his PhD studies, Dr. Khachadourian served as a teaching assistant and teaching fellow for advanced epidemiology and biostatistics courses. Dr. Khachadourian’s research in public health focuses on the theoretical and methodological, as well as the applied aspects of epidemiology in the field. His main interest in theory lies in advanced epidemiologic and statistical methods, with an emphasis on causal inference using data from observational studies. . To pursue his passion in education and research, in 2017, Dr. Khachadourian returned to AUA, mentoring MPH students and teaching research methods course, receiving AUA Faculty Teaching Excellence Prize (2019). In 2020, Dr. Khachadourian joined the Department of Psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded Postdoctoral Fellow studying epidemiology of psychiatric and neurodevelopmental diseases. Dr. Khachadourian continues to serve as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at AUA’s SPH.

Hratchia Lylozian is a Researcher Associate at the Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development (CHSR). He has been involved in research projects at the CHSR since 2015, mainly in the field of Tuberculosis (TB). He is currently managing the field operations of the Entrepreneurs in Health Project of the Turpanjian Rural Development Program. In 2016, he was appointed as the monitoring and evaluation expert at the National Tuberculosis Control Centre of the Ministry of Health of Armenia, later he held the position of TB Services Quality Assurance and Research Expert. Dr. Lylozian was involved in research studies at the NTCC which aimed to improve patients’ quality of care and TB services structural and financial reforms. He has also worked as a consultant for international organizations such as the World Health Organization, the World Bank, and Transparency International. 

Dr. Lylozian holds a MD degree from the Yerevan State Medical University, and a Master of Public Health from the Turpanjian College of Health Sciences at the American University of Armenia.

Dr. Diana Muradyan is a Research Associate at the Zvart Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Service Research and Development (CHSR). Dr. Muradyan joined the CHSR as a researcher after earning her MPH degree in 2020. She has been involved in a number of projects conducted by the CHSR, particularly those focusing on clinical and quantitative research in the field of COVID-19 seroepidemiology and preventive ophthalmology.

Dr. Muradyan earned her MD from Yerevan State Medical University in 1999. In 2004, she defended her PhD thesis on “Some new aspects of GABA Immunomodulating role”. Starting 2008, Dr. Muradyan has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology at Yerevan State Medical University. As the Vice Dean, Dr. Muradyan provided leadership in General Medicine Faculty development at Yerevan State Medical University from 2010-2018.  In 2016-2017 within the framework of Erazmus Mundus MEDEA project she conducted a Postdoctoral research at the University of Perugia (Italy), in the department of Pharmaceutical, Biochemical and Health section, Microbiology. Her research focused on adhesiveness and biofilm formation of different bacteria on various surfaces and human cell lines, the impact of probiotics/ prebiotics on peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and the determination of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Lusine Musheghyan is a research lecturer at the American University of Armenia and research associate at the  Zvart Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development (CHSR) at the Turpanjian College of Health Sciences at AUA. She has been involved in various CHSR projects since 2012, particularly focusing on tuberculosis research, health services quality assessment, emergency preparedness and response. She teaches Global Health to AUA undergraduate students.

In 2013-2017 she worked as the MPH student recruitment coordinator. Before joining AUA Lusine worked and volunteered in different organizations in the field of social protection, both governmental and nongovernmental, focusing on social and health policy evaluation, research and analysis. She earned her Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the American University of
Armenia in 2014 and Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Yerevan State University in 2012.

Dr. Varduhi Petrosyan is a professor and dean in the Turpanjian College of  Health Sciences (CHS)American University of Armenia (AUA). She also directs the Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development (CHSR). Dr. Petrosyan was the associate dean in 2007-2015. She earned her PhD from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy and Management. She also has a Master of Science, focusing on environmental health, from the University of Idaho and a degree in biochemistry from Yerevan State University. She has successfully led health services research projects in Armenia and the region focusing on public health services, tobacco control, tuberculosis control, primary care, ophthalmic care, diabetes care, environmental health, and other important topics. Dr. Petrosyan teaches graduate courses in health services research, program evaluation, and comparative health systems. In 2011-2016, she was a member of the Country Coordination Mechanism for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria programs in the Republic of Armenia. In 2012-2014, Dr. Petrosyan was the Advisor on Health Reforms to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia on a voluntary basis. Currently she is a member of the Public Council next to the Minister of Health of the Republic of Armenia, the Management Council of the Health Inspectorate Body of the Government of Armenia, the Primary Health Care Strengthening Task Force of the Ministry of Health and is the Deputy Chair of the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group of the Republic of Armenia. Prior to her arrival to AUA, she held a position of Research Assistant at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she conducted research on comparative health systems (focusing on health spending and cross national comparison of quality) in member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. She has been elected to Delta Omega Alpha Chapter, the US National Public Health Honorary Society in 2006. Dr. Petrosyan has authored many peer-reviewed publications and has extensively presented her work at international scientific meetings and conferences. She is currently the Associate Editor of the International Journal for Equity in Health, an open access, peer-reviewed journal.

Serine Sahakyan is a Senior Researcher at the Zvart Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development. Her research experience involves designing and implementing nationwide quantitative and qualitative research projects in public health, including clinical and behavioral studies, operational research and program evaluations. In recent years, she has focused on assessing and strengthening the Primary Health Care system in Armenia. She published her work in peer-reviewed international journals and presented in scientific conferences.

Serine served as a Teaching Associate for the Master of Public Health Program courses Survey Research Methods, Qualitative Research Methods, Biostatistics, and Social & Behavioral Sciences in Public Health, and for the Basics of Healthy Lifestyle undergraduate course. She earned her MPH degree from the Gerald and Patricia Turpanjian College of Health Sciences in 2015. During her MPH studies, she was awarded merit-based scholarships and placed third in a nationwide competition for “Best Student” among health professionals, a highly competitive award bestowed by the Republic of Armenia Ministry of Education and Science. Serine also holds a BS in Pharmacology and a degree as Nurse Manager.

Zhanna Sargsyan is a Research Associate at the Zvart Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development (CHSR). She has joined the CHSR in 2018 and has been involved in a number of projects focusing on Tobacco Control. Zhanna received her Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the American University of Armenia in 2018. During her studies at AUA she was awarded University Wide Academic Scholarship (UWAS). Her MPH thesis project explored the knowledge attitude and practice of Armenian parents on car safety seats for children living in Yerevan. Zhanna has also earned a Master degree in Special Education from Armenian State Pedagogical University in 2010.

Meri Tadevosyan is a Research Associate and Financial Manager at the Zvart Avedisian Onanian Center for Health Services Research and Development (CHSR) since 2011. She obtained her MPH degree from AUA in 2011. She also has a Master of Economics from the Yerevan State University of Economics. During her studies at AUA she received merit based Kodjayan Scholarship. Her thesis work “Influence of Financing and Payment Mechanisms on Medical Decision Making: Vaginal Delivery vs. Cesarean Section” was presented at 33rd Annual Meeting of the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM) in Chicago, Illinois, USA. In 2012-2013 she was a member of the organizing committee of the International Scientific Symposium on Emerging Issues in Environmental and Occupational Health: Mining and Construction in Transition Economies. She participated in trainings on Business Writing, Financial accounting, and Economic Evaluation Methods: Understanding Cost-Effectiveness. From 2000 to 2007 she worked in a Pharmacy, as a Director’s Assistant and in other private companies as a Marketing Manager and Shareholder.
